Should we be like the UK and have traffic cops with surveillance cameras on their caps? www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-… | | Sorry, It's 1984 right now this minute. And there is at least one that does now. | Does Britain have CCTV everywhere? I saw this on Law and Order:UK, and I found it hard to believe. To an American, this would be a serious breach of privacy. Are there government installed CCTV cameras in homes? What is not fair game for the government to be able to see? As an American, who guards my privacy closely, I couldn't conceive of this. I know we have stoplight cams to catch traffic light scofflaws, but I hope that's as far as it will go. Is this ubiquitous CCTV thing real, what do Britons think about it if so, and how did your government convince you it was a good thing to do? Here in America we say, "Those who would sacrifice essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." I know someone's going to tout the lack of gun crimes in Britain, but there are other ways to kill or to hurt someone , and the fact that it may be seen won't stop all of them. | there is no CCTV in peoples' homes. It is used mainly in town and city centres, shopping areas, railway stations to monitor traffic conditions on major roads and so on. Most people in the UK are indifferent to it and in shopping areas where mugging or pickpocketing was a problem most welcome it as a deterrent to crime.
The cameras aren't installed by the Government. Some are put up by the local authority or town council and some are on private property as security systems.
I don't think we are sacrificing our liberty at all - what sort of liberty are we sacrificing? It isn't stopping us from doing anything we want to do. |
